Money Matters
.....
Turkish Currency
The Yeni Turkish Lira (new Turkish Lira) was launched on the 1st of January 2005 and is now the legal tender. The equivalent of your pence is “kurus”
The exchange rate fluctuates almost daily. It is the best to change small amounts regularly.
It is actually illegal destroy, write on, crumple, tear or burn banknotes.
Changing Cash
Sterling is widely accepted ( Scottish notes are not widely accepted) and can
often be changed in shops, bars & restaurants. However , banks offer the official exchange rate but usually change small commission rate whereas Exchange Offices tend to offer a slightly lower rate and don’t always advertise that they charge commission! Always ask for the rate and receipt. Carefully check that the correct rate has been used and that you have the right amount money in your hand before walking away.
You can change money at your accommodation reception but its charging high commission. In Sarigerme village the best places are PTT (Post Office) and Basket Tours office. Because PTT Office is charging maximum 5% commission and Basket Tours doesn’t charge any commission. They are using Turkish central bank exchange rates.
Traveller’s Cheques
These are exchanged in the same way and in any bank of Turkey. The nearest exchange place is Ortaca Town. You will need to show your passport , as well as date & countersign the cheques in the presence of the cashier.
Credit Cards
Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted in shops and restaurant but it’s best
to check before purchasing. You might pay slightly more when using a credit card in a shop as the banks charge commission for this service. If your card chipped, you will be required to enter the pin number in the same way as in UK.
Cash Machines
There are two Cash Points in Sarigerme village. When you enter to village, you gonna realize them.
The one beside our office ( the green one ) gives you Turkish Lira, Euro, and Dollar.
But, you can get Pound Sterling, Dollar, and Euro, from the one (the blue one ), opposite BASKET TRAVEL AGENCY.
Please be aware that;
